Arrangement: Flowers, Incense, Tank
I did this after watching the anime series Girls und Panzer. It is a still life celebrating the feminine pursuits of flower arranging, incense and tankery. I wanted the tank to lurk in the composition. To act as a kind of reward to the viewer that takes the time to look.
Song of Solomon 1:13
I hadn’t read the Song of Solomon since I was 17. It surprised me then, and it surprises me now. It is such a change of pace for the Old Testament. It is a kind of case study for thinking about the moral guidance laid out in the Bible. This is the third verse that I’ve illustrated. I have ideas for others, too. So I mght return at some point.
Guy of Warwick slaying the Dun Cow
A local solicitor held a competition to provide pictures of Warwickshire to illustrate a celebration calendar. At the time I was living on Dunsmore Heath, so the intrepid Guy slaying the Dun Cow seemed the ideal choice for me. In the event he was selected for the calendar as the picture for February.
Candle Dancers of Death
Emil Nolde is one of the artists that challenge me. So many of his works speak in the here-and-now and demand a response from me. I took his Candle Dancers and reinterpreted them as the Death Sisters. Death is so often imagined as a man, but he’s beyond all that. And there’s more than one Death, isn’t there?
